Mason Day at the General Assembly

Alumni are asked to join students, faculty and friends in a show of support for Mason at the Virginia General Assembly. No prior advocacy experience is required, just a love for Mason! Participants are encouraged to show their support by wearing spirited Mason attire.  

Sabena Moretz, Associate Director of State Government Relations, will lead a conference call on Wednesday, January 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 pm. to brief alumni on the day's events and the university's legislative priorities. You may participate by dialing (559) 726-1000 and entering the participant access code 1001302#.  

Whether you're able to join for the whole day or stop by for a brief moment, we hope you will take part in this opportunity to stand for Mason at the Virginia General Assembly. 

Schedule of events (subject to change):

 8:30 a.m.— Arrive in Capitol Square. Continental breakfast offered in the Capitol Building

9:00 a.m.— Official group welcome and address by President Cabrera in the
Capitol Building, House Room #2

9:45 a.m.— Walk to General Assembly Building

10:00 a.m.— Group meetings with legislators and aides, committee meetings begin

11:15 a.m.— Group photo on the steps of the Capitol Building

11:30 a.m.—  Legislative sessions begin. Mason delegation, seated in the Galleries, to be introduced and recognized by the membership of both the House and Senate  

12:00 p.m.— Group walks back to the General Assembly Building for boxed lunches

12:30 p.m.— Student buses loaded; return to Fairfax  

Parking in Richmond: 
The area around Capitol Square is very busy when the General Assembly is in Session, so parking is not quite as straightforward as you may be used to in downtown RVA.  Also, you'll need to go through security at the Bank Street entrance to enter the Capitol, so plan enough time to navigate into the building as well.

St. Paul's Church Garage at 111 N. 8th Street

700 Centre Garage at 112 N. 8th Street

Library of Virginia Garage at 800 E. Broad Street (garage entrances on both 8th and 9th Street)

Carpenter Center Lot at 600 E. Grace Street
